We’ve reached that point in the semester where dorm life is just not cutting it anymore—you’re dreaming of a full-sized fridge, hardwood floors, and a shower you don’t need flip-flops for.

Before you jump headfirst into the off-campus search, let me share my best tips on picking the perfect spot and roommates to make your new home everything you want it to be.

Neighborhoods 101: Fenway, Brookline, and Allston

Fenway

If you’re after an upscale city vibe, Fenway is your place. It’s packed with perks—Star Market, TimeOut Market, Pressed Juicery, Solidcore, and Bartaco—all steps away. Plus it has easy access to Fenway bars for nightlife. Campus is a quick 15-20 minute walk and while rent’s on the higher side, the convenience and quality make it worth it.

Brookline

If you’re after a chill, residential vibe, Brookline’s the spot—I live here, so trust me. It’s quiet, full of green spaces, and has plenty of apartment complexes and spacious whitestones. If you’re in Greek life, you’ll constantly run into friends walking by, and it’s perfect for living close to your best friends without being in the same space. The rent is a bit high, but you’re paying for peace and room to breathe. It also has easy T-access, is a 10-20 minute walk to campus, and is near Trader Joe’s, Kupel’s, and Brookline’s downtown.

Allston

Allston is BU’s go-to for affordable, party-friendly living. Close to west campus, FitRec, and plenty of frat houses, it is ideal if you’re looking for a social vibe. Packed with late-night spots like Scoop N Scootery and T Anthony’s, Allston’s a bit noisy and less safe, but for cheap rent and a 20-minute walk to campus, it’s a popular option.

Final Thoughts

There are plenty of places to live off-campus, but these three—Fenway, Brookline, and Allston—are some of the most popular for a reason. Each has its own vibe, so think about what matters most to you. Wherever you end up, choose your space and roommates thoughtfully, and make your new place feel like home.
