As the seasons change and the temperature drops, it’s time to cozy up in our autumnal flair. But instead of styling our typical puffer coats and leather jackets, there’s a new addition to our fall lookbooks: suede fringe.

Fringe looks were commonly worn in the 60s and 70s, aligning with the influence of Western and bohemian styles in the U.S. at the time. The fringe pattern is bunches of hanging frills and threads, primarily accented on suede jackets, boots, and pants. Fringe has a very playful expression to it with the frills moving as you run, walk, or twirl!

You may remember fringe as the distinctive design worn by influencers and celebrities at Coachella, aligning with the overall “boho-chic” and “Tumblr girl” aesthetics. After its long hiatus, fringe is finally entering its modern revival.

The resurgence of fringe was first seen at the Chloé Fall 2024 show, featuring eccentric looks with fringe suede and leather pants, jackets, and heels. Chemena Kamali, creative director of Chloé, executed unique looks that reintroduced fashionable ways of styling fringe.

More brands began to follow in Kamali’s footsteps. This past September, brands like Ralph Lauren and Proenza Schouler released their collections featuring fringe looks at New York Fashion Week.

Ralph Lauren’s show was Western-inspired, showcasing sequined fringe skirts and suede fringe jackets and pants. In the Proenza Schouler collection, models wore leather fringe skirts embedded with buttons, as well as strapless fringe gowns.

Both shows presented fringe in ways that have rarely been executed before. The fringe gowns in Proenza Schouler were in pastel shades of white and purple, whereas Ralph Lauren featured fringe skirts with finer, shimmery frills.

These unique uses of fringe demonstrate how Western and bohemian styles can seamlessly blend with modern trends.

Fringe is highly versatile—the design can serve as an accessory on various pieces and can be executed through different fabrics and materials. It can even be styled in an assortment of ways!

A classic brown suede fringe jacket can be found at brands like Free People and Reformation. It goes perfectly over a knit sweater or thin long-sleeve with a pair of oversized jeans or trousers. For a classier look, this jacket could be styled with a long silk or mesh dress, or a thin sweater and basic mini skirt.

Suede fringe boots are best paired with any basic shorts or dress, as they accentuate the pattern of the shoe. These boots can range from quarter to knee length and can be found at Free People or Anthropologie.

Suede bags with fringe accents are also on the rise. With larger shoulder bags trending lately, brands like Ralph Lauren and Isabel Marant offer a variety of suede fringe bags.

The best thing about fringe is its ability to creatively accentuate an outfit and enhance an individual’s visionary expression. So, this fall, make your outfits stand out with a stylish fringe piece!
