And how the energy of the Celtics should extend to a WBNA team

Professional sports teams and athletes are greatly shaping our cities and cultures today. Whether we recognize them for their on-court performance, unique style, or celebrity status, professional sports are a driving force in our economy, communities, and everyday lives.

After the Boston Celtics won the 2024 NBA Championship against the Dallas Mavericks, the city of Boston erupted in celebration. Even those who weren't basketball fans couldn't help but feel the energy and pride that took over the streets.

Following the exciting win, the city held a parade to celebrate the team’s hard work and success. Nearly one million fans flooded the streets with the city's pride on full display.

Preceding the parade, the City of Boston issued a travel advisory encouraging the use of public transportation because of imminent street traffic. The backed-up roads are just one example of how professional sports impact city life. Although they increase traffic congestion, they also create a sense of unity and excitement.

Beyond the celebrations, professional sports teams have significant positive impacts on city economies. The Celtics’ consistently large crowds at TD Garden create jobs, attract fans from around the globe, and contribute to the local economy in meaningful ways.

But the Celtics' impact extends far beyond the court. The team and its players are heavily involved in community outreach and social justice initiatives. Celtics players, along with others in the NBA, have worn apparel or taken stances that support causes such as Black Lives Matter, LGBTQ+ rights, and mental health awareness. Their actions make these topics more visible, encouraging conversations and action among fans.

The Celtics Shamrock Foundation is another example of how the team gives back. Through grassroots programs and funding, the foundation supports local organizations that serve marginalized populations. One of their standout initiatives, Read to Achieve, promotes literacy among young students through book donations and reading events hosted by Celtics players.

Jaylen Brown, in particular, has been an advocate for education reform and social justice. His involvement in local protests and community discussions surrounding police brutality amplified the city's activism and need for social change.

Celtics players have also been strong supporters of the WNBA, attending WNBA games and showing direct support for the athletes. The WNBA has long had disparities between the men’s and women’s leagues in terms of pay, media coverage, and sponsorship opportunities. Their support helps normalize the crossover between male and female athletes and promotes equality in professional sports.

Though Boston doesn’t currently have a WNBA team, adding one could further boost the city's economy and enhance its community spirit. This proposes: how could the city of Boston change if it introduced a WNBA team? Given the Celtics’ success and influence, a Boston-based WNBA team could undoubtedly draw significant fan support, create more jobs, and enhance the city’s vibrant sports culture.
