The Power of Podcasts
by Erica Schwartz
In wellness spaces, we often focus on the power of listening to our own thoughts. While there is definitely a time and place for meditation and self-reflection, what are those of us who can’t get out of our own heads supposed to do? The answer is clear: pop on a podcast.
Getting into podcasts can seem intimidating or even foreign, but they are more accessible than you may think. Nearly any streaming platform you would listen to music on has podcasts available for your listening pleasure.
Nowadays, you can find any type of podcast that you are looking for. Self-help, meditation, relationship advice, true crime—you name it, you can probably find someone who has made a podcast about it. Some of my favorite podcasts are ones I found by simply typing in a subject I was interested in into the Spotify search bar.
Whatever mood you are in, there is a podcast to suit that feeling. Podcasts can be a great tool to help distract you from racing thoughts or refresh old, possibly negative thoughts. They can comfort and provide a best friend or “big sister” type figure as Tam Kaur does in her podcast, “Self Obsessed.” There are also podcasts to share in your joy or give you a laugh, like “Las Culturalistas.”
Podcasts can be a tool for wellness, but they can also literally teach you about your health and the wellness industry as a whole. They can be a great introduction to new health habits like “Fitness Stuff (for normal people)” or encourage you to leave behind practices that don’t actually serve you, like “Maintenance Phase.” If you aren’t ready to commit to an ongoing podcast, there are also tons of short series-style podcasts covering a single story or topic out there for your listening pleasure.
Whether to provide comfort, entertainment, education, or something else, podcasts wield the power to add value to our daily lives without diverting us from our course.
