Navigating Healthy Eating on Campus
A BU Students Guide to Finding Nutritious Options in Dining Halls and Campus Spots
by Anika Mahansaria
Navigating your own diet and finding ways to stay healthy for the first time can be challenging. Every time I walk into the Warren dining hall, the first thing that catches my eye is the pizza station. To make matters worse, the desserts are conveniently placed right next to the salads. So, how can students ensure they practice healthy eating habits?
Personally, I believe the key is focusing on balanced meals rather than strictly “healthy eating.” Health is ultimately a personal journey that varies based on individual goals and dietary preferences. Creating a healthier dining experience doesn’t have to be complicated—it’s all about balance. For instance, if you grab a salad, go ahead and treat yourself to a cookie too. Or, if pizza is your choice, opt for veggie-topped slices to get some nutrients.
One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned is never to skip breakfast. Breakfast often offers the healthiest options, like an omelet station or scrambled eggs, which help you meet your protein goals and start your day on the right foot.
If the dining hall menu starts to feel repetitive, especially as the semester winds down, there are plenty of alternatives both on and off campus to keep your meals interesting and healthy. On campus, I love the avocado toast from Saxbys with a coffee. It’s the perfect study snack, and since the semester is ending, you can use any leftover dining points to treat yourself. The bagels at Einstein Bros. Bagels are also a great study snack that is healthy and filling. For a satisfying and well-balanced lunch, the bowls at Halal Shack are an excellent choice.
Off-campus, Life Alive is one of my favorite spots. Located right at the Amory T stop, it’s a great place to study and enjoy healthy, delicious food. Their menu offers a wide selection, from açai bowls to noodles, and the atmosphere makes it an ideal spot to recharge.
These dining options, both on and off campus, are great for switching up your routine and maintaining healthy eating habits as you navigate the end of the semester.
