Secondhand Finds Worth the Flight

One of the main passions in my life is shopping. Without a doubt, it is one of the main things I have in mind when I am planning a trip abroad. Whenever I arrive in a new country, no matter where I am or how much I know about where I am going, I try to visit a local thrift store, consignment store, or secondhand boutique. Yes, I am a college student, so buying secondhand is the most feasible method to buy memorable pieces to remind me of my trip without breaking the bank. However, I give myself a little more credit than that. Going to thrift in another country can introduce you to the local people better than some museums or pricey experiences can. You can witness a physical example of how people live and interact with the world around them through clothing. Not only can you see what they like, but how they liked it and how they gave that piece a slice of their life.

Also, more often than not, these sites are hotspots for other young and fashion-forward adults, so they are optimal for meeting people if that is something you want to do. Here, I have compiled a list that touches every continent except North America and Antarctica to give you the broadest amount of choice possible for many destinations based on recommendations from primary sources (me and my friends).

Did I find out if there was a thrift store in Antarctica? Yes. Does it exist? Unfortunately for me, no.

Europe

Zoetrope Vintage - Barcelona, Spain

This vintage store is tucked into the side of a narrow cobblestone street called Carrer de les Ramelleres. The small shop has the cutest selection of handpicked contemporary jackets, skirts, and pants in a neighborhood full of similar spots.

Asia

Bangsue Junction - Bangkok, Thailand

This is my favorite thrift spot that I have been to abroad. Imagine a huge multi-story thrift mall selling everything secondhand, from jerseys for every club or national team ever to vintage Japanese cameras, Evisu denim, and Sonny Angels. It is the perfect place to get lost in—it even has a food court!

Africa

El Ataba Market - Cairo, Egypt

El Ataba Market is known for being a thrift lovers' paradise with its busy streets and souqs. My friend who lived in Cairo recommends it for finding good-quality band-tees at extremely affordable prices. It is one of the most famous second-hand markets in the country!

South America

Peça Rara Brechó - Brazil (Chain)

This chain of thrift stores can be found all across Brazil and is known for its commitment to sustainability and community engagement. My friend who lives in Brasília recommends this place for people who love vintage sundresses and sandal heels. However, the vibe here is more of a consignment store than a Goodwill, if you get what I mean.

Australia

Glebe Market - Sydney, Australia

Glebe Market is an eclectic vintage market incorporating thrifting and local small businesses selling everything from handmade jewelry to global cuisine. The vintage camera and purse assortment is insane, and it also exhibits young local artists, contributing to that intense youthful Australian vibe.

My Honorable Mentions:

2nd Street—Tokyo, Japan

This is also a chain that can be found all over the country. It's a great place for vintage designer and Onitsuka Tiger sneakers.

Feira da Ladra - Lisbon, Portugal

This outdoor market has a fantastic selection of sunglasses and handmade jewelry, especially rings and bracelets made from spoons!
