Getting Down to the Basics

There’s all this rave about a “good basic,” but what does that really mean?

Let’s talk about the unsung heroes of our wardrobes: the basics. They allow your accent pieces to shine, standing as the foundation of your outfit. The staple white tee, your go-to sweater, or those jeans that have molded to fit your body perfectly—they don’t scream for attention, but without them, the look is not complete. So let’s get down to the basics, literally.

Think back to the last time you were putting an outfit together and all you needed was one perfectly fitting shirt to pop under a cardigan or a pair of low-rise baggy jeans to tie everything together, but you came up empty-handed. Here’s a tip: whenever I scroll on Pinterest for style inspiration, I make sure to pay attention to not only the cool, unique pieces but what basics are styled with them that make the outfit look cohesive.

If you like the elevated look, a figure-hugging baby tee made of a stretchy material should become your closet staple. Without it, your various mini skirts and slacks don’t have a piece to tie the look together.

Aritzia’s “Contour” line features various slim-fit tops with different necklines and sleeve lengths. Though on the pricier side, their double-lined, figure-flattering fabric ensures that the piece won’t lose shape after many washes. Style with gold hoops and a sleek bun and you’re set for a brunch date with your friends or a sophisticated dinner.

Finding your go-to jeans is a game-changer. My most worn pair this season is a low-rise, straight-leg jean in a dark wash. I find low-rise to flatter me best and darker tones compliment the winter season well, making that pair a constant wear.

Though there are a million styles and fits, choosing the perfect denim can be simple: discover the rise you prefer, then experiment with the style (y2k flare, baggy, bootcut, etc). Levi’s jeans have a style code associated with each type of fit, like the classic straight-leg 501, making it easy to remember your favorites. Urban Outfitters currently has the best selection of trendy jeans made of good quality denim, so make sure to watch out for their sales!

Once you’ve established a couple of variations that look best on you, buy that style in a light, dark, and black wash. These three colors go with almost everything and you never have to worry about the fit.

The beauty of basics is that they give you the freedom to be creative without overthinking it. Invest in those essential basics because, in the long run, it will save you money and time to have a trusted wardrobe. From Monday’s lecture to a Friday night out, your basics tie your outfits together, no matter what aesthetic you go for.
