How you can help uplift the Black community this February
By Bethany Hartman

Black History Month celebrates the remarkable achievements of African Americans and the history of those who came before us. Consistently supporting Black-owned businesses is a practical way to uplift the Black community. After exploring many Black-owned businesses in Boston, here are four to patronize.
This Black-owned curated boutique in the heart of the South End offers a unique blend of products that showcase Black culture and creativity. It amplifies other Black-owned businesses by serving as a hub for community engagement and creating a monthly subscription service for artisanal gift boxes. Bos. Shop even provides an up-to-date directory for Black-owned businesses in and around Boston.
Sweet Teez Bakery is a Boston-based, black-owned company that sells homemade treats with high-quality, nut-free ingredients. Sweet Teez bakery offers rich treats such as chocolate dreamcakes, sweet potato pies, and carrot cupcakes. In the spirit of Black History Month, it is important to show your appreciation for Black culture by contributing to the economic empowerment of Black entrepreneurs.
Black celebration doesn’t stop at supporting Black-owned businesses. Venture beyond the traditional gift-giving and immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of the Boston community. The Ethelbert Cooper Gallery in Harvard Square is a world-known exhibition featuring contemporary and historical works of Black artists. The Cooper Gallery also hosts workshops and artist talks to cross the barrier between artists and viewers.
For those seeking a more laid-back evening, the South End’s Darryl’s Corner Bar & Kitchen offers a taste of the South with its soulful cuisine and live jazz performances. Good food and music converge, creating an atmosphere of warmth and intimacy.
As we commemorate Black History Month this February, let us not confine our support to only a single month of the year. The celebration of Blackness should exist all year round.
