This summer, if you aren’t heading to the beach, or the mountains or to the same ice-cream shop job you’ve had since high school, our Culture staff has compiled a list of movies for you to enjoy instead.
Ocean’s Eight (dir. Gary Ross)
This spinoff of the well-known Ocean’s Trilogy features an all-female cast, including Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway and Rihanna as con artists, hackers and other criminals attempting a high-scale art heist. It’s a crime drama set against the annual, gaudy Met Gala that is sure to thrill. It premieres in theaters on June 8.
Crazy Rich Asians (dir. Jon M. Chu)
This comedy starring Constance Wu is based on a book of the same name about three Chinese families planning an elaborate, show-stopping “wedding of the year.” The film received early praise for bringing diversity to rom-coms, as it is the first film since “The Joy Luck Club” to feature a majority-Asian cast, and the first romance film. It premieres in summer 2018.
Sorry to Bother You (dir. Boots Riley)
This sci-fi comedy starring Tessa Thompson and Armie Hammer premiered at Emerson College and other schools around the greater Boston area in the late spring semester. Lakeith Stanfield plays Cassius Green, a former telemarketer who gains a special power that inadvertently sends him into a dark, murderous parallel universe. It premieres on July 6.
