March comes in like a lion and out like a lamb—and in the wake of the Black Panther—it is leaving us wanting more depth, more excitement, more creativity in our films. Our culture staff compiled a list of films premiering in March that hope to meet these expectations.
A Wrinkle in Time, directed by Ava DuVernay, is based on a book that was some people’s entire childhoods. It’s got a phenomenal cast, including Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling. The movie’s graphics and cinematography are all phenomenal according to the trailers, and it has an incredibly diverse cast. It premieres March 9.
Pacific Rim 2: Uprising is the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s action film about monster-fighting VR robots premiers March 23. The film follows a parallel storyline to the original, with only a few overlapping characters. John Boyega (known as Finn from Star Wars) plays the lead “Jaeger” pilot fighting the “Kaiju,” a breed of otherworldly sea monsters that terrorize the Pacific Ocean. The original Pacific Rim became a cult hit, and the sequel - despite not returning to the beloved characters of the original - is likely to be just as action-packed and creative.
Ready Player One, an upcoming Spielberg drama-and-action film, is an adaptation of a novel of the same name about a virtual reality world where people are competing for the “treasure” inheritance of a tech tycoon. The book is filled with pop culture references, name-dropping, and imaginative exploration of the future of virtual reality video game experiences. Ready Player One premieres March 29—our writer Noemi Arellano Summer will be reviewing it later this month.
Also later this month, keep an eye out for our review of Love, Simon by our writer Hailey Hart-Thompson! Love, Simon is a coming-of-age story with a twist: the protagonist is closeted homosexual, and the story follows the exploration of his sexual identity and the intricacies, the ups and downs, of coming out and falling in love openly and unapologetically. It premieres March 16.
